Winterizing Tips

We hope you've been having a great time in your pool this summer! Soon it will be time to turn our attention to getting the pool ready for winter. To avoid unnecessary problems and costly repairs come Springtime, here are some winterizing suggestions for you!

1. Bring in a Water Sample for testing so your pool water will be balanced prior to closing. Pool water that is out of balance can be very hard on surfaces and equipment over the winter and inhibits the effectiveness of the winterizing shock and algaecides.

2. Brush and vacuum your pool. Your pool must be clean and clear of debris and algae. Clean the waterline with Off The Wall®. Any waterline stains left will be harder to remove in the spring.

3.  The water temperature must fall below 55° before closing your pool. Keep the equipment running if the outside temperature drops below 40° F to prevent freeze damage.

4. Remove any deck equipment; ladder, rails, diving board, etc.

5. Chemically clean the filter with Strip Kwik® or Kleen It®. Cleaning the filter before the winter helps ensure that grease and build-up are removed from the filter medium and don’t become firmly stuck on over the winter.

6.  Add Winterizing Chemicals:

FOR CHLORINE POOLS: If you are using the Winterizing Kit, Add Arctic Blue® Shock, followed by Arctic Blue Algae Protector. Use both products according to label instructions. Add 1 gallon of Liquid Chlorine per 5,000 gallons of pool water.

FOR SOFTSWIM POOLS: Add an initial dose of SoftSwim A (1 quart per 25,000 gallons of water). Add SoftSwim C (1 gallon per 10,000 gallons). Wait 3 hours. Add SoftSwim B to top up to 50 ppm.

7.  Lower the pool water level:

For Aboveground pools: Lower water to 6” below the return fitting.
Inground pools: Lower water 14” below normal operating level, or 12” below skimmer.

8.   Winterize your pool equipment according to manufacturer’s directions.

9.  Remove solar cover and protect during the winter by cleaning with Stow-Away.

10.  Leaves can cause staining. If you have a lot of trees in your yard, cover the pool with a winter cover. Do not install the winter cover before the pool is winterized.

VINYL LINER POOL OWNERS: Make sure your pool does not leak! Check liner patches. Leaking can cause severe damage which is not covered under warranty.

Air pillow or rubber inner tubes can be installed underneath the cover to prevent extra strain on the cover.

Outdoor Spa Winterizing Tips

It may turn cold outside, but keep your spa running smoothly and you'll be able to enjoy the hot water therapy all winter long!

1.  Keep timer off or run spa in standard mode.

2.  Keep your filter(s) clean at all times.

3.  Check for power failure on a DAILY basis.

4.  If your spa is not running, call Pool Works immediately.
